New Year, New Resolutions, New Goals? How would it feel if you were already living your dreams?…

New Year, New Resolutions, New Goals? How would it feel if you were already living your dreams?…

I moved from Berkeley Springs,WV to Takoma Park,MD right before Christmas (and the big snow storms!). I had known for a while that it was the right move for me, especially as I was spending so much time on the road or at my friends’ place in Takoma Park. I waited patiently for the right time and was lucky to easily find the perfect apartment for me now. I was renting a fantastic place in West Virginia so, in several occasions, people asked me if I was worried about finding a good place. Each time, I answered ‘no’ without hesitation; wherever I have been (and I have moved a lot as an adult, across continents!), I have always been lucky to find places that were just perfect for me at the time. Then I realized: How could I feel this way on that particular issue and in a few other areas of my live but not in all of them? How would it feel to transfer that certainty that it is going to be perfect, that I cannot fail… in the areas of my life that are more challenging?

Here is a process that can help you step into already living what you want to attract into your life. If you can, do this exercise with a partner – a friend or somebody you trust; it will be easier and also more fun.

Step 1: This is a preliminary step: Determine which senses are the most important for you (sight, smell, taste, touch, hearing). You probably know part of the answer but I would still recommend that you take the time to (re)discover how this works for you. You might surprise yourself… Tell your partner a very basic story (describing the farmers’ market or your favorite garden or the simple act of opening a gift you recently received…) successively appealing to one of the five senses (so only to images, or to smells, taste, hearing…). Take the time to repeat the process separately for each sense; it is very important. Don’t assume that you already know the answer. Each time, notice how it feels and what seems more powerful to you. If you do it with a partner, you will be able to check how it feels both when you are the story teller and when you are the listener (both are important). Then determine at least two (three if you can) senses that have the most impact on you.

Step 2: Take one of the intentions (or projects) that you have for yourself for this year. Start with something that is “easy” for you, one that you know not to be overburdened by old patterns, history, etc. Imagine that dream of yours (small or big) and take the time to feel it as if it was already part of your life: feel it in your body, visualize it, smell it, hear it, taste it… whatever works for you. It is important that you don’t imagine all of this as a more or less distant future but as part of your current reality. To get back to the recent example of my move: I realized that I could already see myself in the new place, even before I knew that I would have it, I could see it, I could feel it. And, strangely enough, it did not stop me from continuing to be in the present moment and where I was still living. I would just know that, somewhere, in a parallel reality, or at some level, this had already happened, it was a done deal, I was already living there.

Step 3: Write down how it feels, looks, smells… (relying upon the senses that are the most important for you) and write a sentence in the present tense that captures your feeling. Associate it with an image, a sound, a piece of music or a song, a movement or physical sensation, the smell of an essential oil… whatever works best for you as a reminder of how it feels to be already living your dream. Use this sentence (along with the image, the piece of music, the physical sensation, the perfume…) in your daily routine so that it can be already part of your reality.

Step 4: Then, move to a more difficult topic and a more central wish of yours. Of course, it is easier to do this in areas of our lives where our experiences have reinforced our beliefs that everything is going to be fine. It is a different story when those beliefs have been framed differently, in particular during our childhood. But it is possible. Go through the same process, with even more attention as it can be even more powerful.

Step 5: Take what you have written and the reminders that you have found for yourself and make them part of your daily practices, part of who you already are, even in small ways: in your daily intentions and gratitude, in your interactions with others, in the small things that you do for yourself… Each time self doubt and inner critics come to mind, go back to the image you have selected or the smell or the music…. Act as if you knew that you could not fail. You don’t have to wait for anybody or anything else; you already are that new reality. You already are your dream, your own personal miracle.

Let me know how it is working for you. And don’t hesitate to share your experience and own tips.

To your intentions for 2013 and with gratitude for all you already are…
